Civilian police academy

Edison Police Chief Tom Bryan is pleased to announce that the Edison Police Department is re-launching its Civilian Police Academy. The Civilian Police Academy will begin on January 25, 2023, from 7:30 pm – 9:30 pm and will be held on consecutive Wednesdays through March.  The Civilian Police Academy will be held at the Edison Public Safety Center, 205 Raritan Center Parkway. The Civilian Police Academy is free of charge to Edison residents eighteen (18) or older who register before the deadline of January 17, 2023. Class size is limited to the first twenty-five (25) residents who register. 

Class participants are selected of a first come, first serve basis upon receipt of a completed application. Topics that will be covered in the Civilian Police Academy will include the following: Police Patrol Operations, Criminal Investigation Bureau Functions that include our Detectives and Juvenile Unit. Additionally, Civilian Police Academy participants will learn about our S.W.A.T. (Special Weapons and Tactics) Team, Emergency Management, Domestic Violence, Crime Prevention, Home Security, Personal Safety and Firearms Safety.​

PROMOTING DIVERSITY IN HIRING AND RECRUITING

Consistent with NJSA 52:17B-4.10 and AG Directive 7.2021, the Edison Police Department has established a program to ensure that in order to most effectively serve the Edison community and effectively interact with all community members, the Edison Police Department shall make a good faith effort to recruit a diverse workforce that is reflective of the diversity of the jurisdictions it serves. The Edison Police Department shall submit a prescribed and standardized report to the Attorney General via the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office annually before January 31st of each year so that the data may be made public as published by the Attorney General’s Office. If any group within the community is determined to be underrepresented, the Chief of Police may address the concern through Recruitment, Standardized Forms, Clear Hiring Criteria, Removing Criteria Barriers, Removing Application Barriers, Community Outreach, and Raising Awareness as may be determined to be effective solutions.

DEA Drug Take Back

Safely dispose of your unused, unwanted, or expired prescription medications in the drop off box located in the Edison Police Department in Town Hall.

This Bin is accessible 7 am – 5 pm Monday – Friday, 365 days a year.

NJ Division of Consumer Affairs has developed Project Medicine Drop in an effort to halt the abuse and diversion of prescription drugs.

2021 Edison Police Annual Use of Force Report

In compliance with NJ Attorney General direction, Edison has completed and posted here for review, the 2021 Use of Force Report. This report includes information on Use of Force Reports submitted for incidents between 1/1/2021 and 12/31/2021 and marked as complete by 01/07/2022 at 12am.

Notably, there are only 0.5 uses of police force per 1,000 police-citizen contacts and 53.5 per 1,000 arrests. The report was completed based on the 113 use of force reports completed in 2021.  

46 Runners Complete the Edison 2021 Torch Run

The Edison Police Department is proud of our 46 runners in this year’s Torch Run who each completed the 6.2 mile course along Route 27 from Woodbridge to Highland Park, joined briefly by Metuchen PD as we traveled through the borough nestled within the borders of Edison. Along the course, supporters came out to cheer and the Edison Firefighters offered water at two of the firehouses. We also thank the many elected officials and dignitaries who joined us for a prelude ceremony.

Throughout NJ, more than 3,000 runners completed over 750 miles over 26 separate routes to help carry the “Flame of Hope” in this charity run to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics New Jersey. 

VISION FOR 2021

The year 2020 was challenging for all of us. Difficult times require adaptation and transformation. We adapted to meet the challenges of the COVID-19 Pandemic, providing excellent police services while seeking to protect our human resources. We are also bringing transformational changes to the organization with a focus on problem oriented policing. Under our new Community Oriented Policing Initiative new units will work with traditional bureaus, coordinating and cooperating in the shared responsibility of solving problems in our community. We all look forward to seeing the police department continue to evolve in a positive direction.

COP Chat May 20th

In our second COP Chat, Officer Melissa Michalak from the Firearms Unit explains the NJ Firearms Permit application process and answers questions. Some live questions were edited out for privacy purposes. Also, members of the COP Unit, Sergeant Donald Ship, Officer Jennifer Iorio and Officer Shirley Dong, were available to answer questions.

COP Chat March 24th

March 24th was the first COP Chat. Chief Thomas Bryan joined Sergeant Ship and Officer Dong of the Communit Oriented Policing Unit live on Zoom where they answered questions from the public. The session was so successful that we’ve scheduled a second COP Chat for May 20th when Officer Michalak will join with the COP Unit and answer questions regarding the new firearms application process. The Edison Police Department is committed to partnering with the community, listening to feedback, and moving forward with community based partnerships aimed at solving problems. In 2020, the new Traffic and Community Oriented Policing (COP) units were formed under the direction of the Police Administration Bureau with the goal to work with the community solving community identified problems.
